Bill Dean ROI, WGA, NDD, ATC
Born North London 1st March 1932
Studied Book Illustration, Printing and Binding at Hornsey School of Art returning after National Service to take ATC
Started painting 1986 when made redundant. Learned to paint by reading everything, studying other painters’ work and learning on the job. Inspired by Walter Sickert, Ruskin Spear and early Victor Pasmore.
Started painting on site when invited by Trevor Chamberlain to be a guest of WGA. Elected to WGA 2011
My main material is Oil Paint and I was elected a member of the ROI in 2010. I use water colour mainly for sketching on site.
My paintings vary in size from 6"x 8" upward but never so large that they cannot be carried under the arm when framed.
When painting on site I try to capture the feel of the surroundings, the climate and, where possible, the activity of people in the area,
Exhibited with: RA (summer exhibition), RSMA, ROI, RBA, Discerning Eye, WGA and at various galleries in UK.
Awards: Arts Club, Manina Joy Schwaber, Winsor and Newton, Discerning Eye Chairman’s Purchase Prize, Fine Art UK, Hesketh Hubbard
My ambition for the future is to improve as much as possible and to emulate the high levels reached by my contemporaries in the WGA
